Application of the Muhawarah Method in Improving Middle School Students' Speaking Skills

This research aims to investigate the planning, implementation, and learning outcomes, particularly in improving students' speaking skills using the method of muhawarah. The method employed in this study is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subjects consisted of 28 seventh-grade students at Muhammadiyah University Makassar Junior High School. The research was conducted over two cycles, with each cycle comprising two meetings. Data were collected using observation and test techniques. The results of the research show an increase in the average scores of students from Cycle I (63.92) to Cycle II (82.57), indicating a 20% improvement in learning outcomes. These findings affirm that the muhawarah learning method is effective in enhancing students' speaking skills. Through this approach, students have the opportunity to practice and refine their speaking skills in a structured and guided context. The implications of this research suggest that the muhawarah approach can be an effective alternative in improving students' speaking skills. By providing opportunities for students to actively participate in speaking and discussing ideas, they can develop their communication abilities more effectively.
