Abstract

This study was designed to investigate the use of code-switching by English teachers at Public Senior High School 3 Takalar. One English teacher from Public Senior High School 3 Takalar participated in this research using a descriptive qualitative method. This qualitative method examines the code-switching models used by English teachers employing Suwinto's theory (2007), the types of code-switching used by English teachers using Poplack's theory (2004), and the reasons for the use of code-switching by English teachers at Public Senior High School 3 Takalar. Data collection was conducted through video recordings, observations, and interviews, followed by data analysis. Based on the research findings, (1) English teachers utilized all code-switching models, including internal and external switches. (2) English teachers employed all types of code-switching, namely intersentential, intrasentential, and tag switching. (3) Reasons for teachers' use of code-switching in the classroom included discussing specific topics, expressions of emotion, providing input to students, managing classroom dynamics, and catering to student abilities. These findings indicate that English teachers need to pay attention to the use of code-switching in the teaching and learning process.
