Abstract

Pa'gellu' is a traditional dance of the Toraja community often performed during rambu tuka ceremonies (celebration ceremonies), welcoming guests, wedding parties, and ma'bua (the inauguration ceremony of a Tongkonan house). This dance has a deep historical root, originating from Ne’lekke as a form of welcoming heroes returning from wars. The Pa’Gellu’ dance consists of 12 main movements, considered as the philosophy of life and work ethos of the Toraja people. Some symbolic movements include pa’dena’-dena (Sparrow), pa’gellu’tua (respect), Pa’tulekken (Rest), passiri (a woman winnowing rice), and pa’ra’pak penttalun (water, fire, and air). The significance of Pa’Gellu’ in Toraja ceremonies lies in expressing gratitude to God for all the blessings bestowed. It reflects the cultural and spiritual richness of the Toraja community, making it not just a visual entertainment but also a means of expressing moral values. The research method employed is qualitative, utilizing data sources such as literature, articles, and journals. The analysis concludes that Pa’Gellu’ is not merely a dance but rather an art form carrying profound meanings that enrich the cultural heritage of the Toraja people.
