Reading Ability to Understand German Texts in High School Students in Makassar City

Abstract

This study used a quantitative descriptive method. Its aim was to determine the level of reading comprehension among students and the factors influencing their reading comprehension abilities. Data was collected using multiple-choice tests, true-false tests, matching tests, and questionnaires. Data analysis was done through percentage calculations. The study population consisted of 11th-grade students at SMA Negeri 16 Makassar, with the research sample taken from class XI MIPA 2 SMA Negeri 16 Makassar, totaling 28 students. The results showed that the reading comprehension skills of students in class XI MIPA 2 SMA Negeri 16 Makassar were at a "Good" level (78.43%). Factors influencing students' reading comprehension abilities included internal and external factors. Internally, 23 respondents (82%) stated that they considered learning German to be important. Externally, 18 respondents (64%) stated that the classroom atmosphere supported their learning of German text comprehension.
